Particles of Doubt: Разве and Неужели
When you hear shocking gossip or read about a media scandal, you often want to say "Really?" or "Is it possible that...?" In Russian, you can express doubt and astonishment by starting your question with the interrogative particles разве or неужели.
Both particles turn a regular statement into an expressive yes/no question without changing the word order.
Разве expresses mild doubt or disbelief, usually implying you expected a different answer.
| Is it really the truth, and not just a rumor? | Разве это правда, а не просто слух? |
| Could he really take a bribe and deceive us? | Разве он мог взять взятку и обмануть нас? |
Неужели is stronger. It expresses genuine shock or deep astonishment ("Can it really be true?!").
| Is this rumor about their divorce really true? | Неужели этот слух об их разводе — правда? |
| Did they really fire the director because of this gossip? | Неужели директора уволили из-за этой сплетни? |
You can also use these particles with negative verbs to express surprise that something isn't true (e.g., "Are there really no...").
| Are there really no details about the new sensation in this article? | Разве в этой статье нет подробностей о новой сенсации? |
Indirect Questions with "ли"
When discussing scandals, you will often need to report indirect questions using "if" or "whether" (e.g., "I don't know if he lied," or "They asked whether he was fired").
In Russian, do not use если (if) for these sentences. Instead, use the particle ли. To form an indirect question, place the questioned word (usually the verb) at the beginning of the clause, followed immediately by ли.
| I do not know if he deceived us, but it is a real shock. | Я не знаю, обманул ли он нас, но это настоящий шок. |
| The journalists asked whether they fired this scandalous actor. | Журналисты спросили, уволили ли этого скандального актёра. |
