Questions & Answers about Россияне работают гораздо больше.
Why does the plural of россиянин end in -яне instead of the usual plural endings?
Nouns denoting nationalities or groups that end in -анин or -янин drop the -ин when forming the plural. For the nominative plural, they add -е instead of -ы or -и. That is why россиянин becomes россияне.
What is the difference between россияне and русские?
Русские refers to ethnic Russians, whereas россияне refers to citizens of the Russian Federation regardless of their ethnic background. This sentence specifically talks about the citizens.
Why is гораздо used here instead of a simpler word like очень?
Гораздо translates to much or by far, and it is strictly used to strengthen comparative words. Because больше is a comparative meaning more, you must use гораздо больше to say much more. You cannot say очень больше.
How do we know больше means more and not bigger in this sentence?
Больше is the comparative form for both большой (big) and много (a lot). In this sentence, it modifies the verb работают (they work), so it acts as an adverb meaning more. If it were describing a noun, it would mean bigger.
