Questions & Answers about Неужели ты веришь в эту чепуху даже сейчас?
How does даже add meaning to this sentence compared to just asking if you believe it now?
The particle даже means 'even' and is used here to emphasize extreme surprise or disbelief. By saying даже сейчас (even now), the speaker is highlighting that it is shocking you still believe it after so much time has passed or after new facts have come to light.
I know ли is used for yes/no questions, but what exactly does неужели do at the start of this sentence?
Неужели translates to 'really?' or 'is it really possible that?'. While a standard question just asks for facts, starting a sentence with неужели adds a strong sense of emotional doubt, disbelief, or surprise. It pairs perfectly with даже to show how shocked the speaker is.
Why is 'this nonsense' in the accusative case (в эту чепуху) instead of the prepositional case?
When you talk about believing in a concept, idea, or a person, Russian uses the verb верить plus the preposition в followed by the accusative case. You only use the prepositional case with в to talk about a physical location where an action takes place.
