Questions & Answers about Вы начали тестировать программу, чтобы сделать это задание?
Why do we use the imperfective verb тестировать after начали?
This is a strict rule in Russian: phase verbs (verbs about starting, continuing, or finishing an action) must always be followed by an imperfective infinitive. Even though the starting is a completed event, the action you start is viewed as an ongoing process.
Wait, if the action is an ongoing process, why is начали perfective?
The verb начать (to start) is perfective here because the act of starting itself was a single, completed event in the past. You finished starting it! But the verb that follows it (тестировать) stays imperfective because testing is the ongoing process that was started.
Why does the second part of the sentence use the perfective verb сделать?
The second clause expresses a goal or result using чтобы (in order to). The speaker is asking if you started testing the program to get the task completely finished. Since the focus is on a completed result, we use the perfective сделать.
I always forget: is the comma before чтобы mandatory?
Yes! In Russian, subordinate clauses starting with conjunctions like чтобы, что, or потому что must always be separated from the main sentence by a comma.
