Questions & Answers about Куртка висит на вешалке.
Why do we use висит here instead of вешает?
Висеть (to be hanging) is an intransitive verb that describes a state or location—the jacket is just resting there. If someone were actively performing the action of hanging the jacket up, you would use the transitive verb вешать, as in Он вешает куртку (He is hanging the jacket).
Why is it на вешалке (Prepositional) instead of на вешалку (Accusative)?
Because висит describes a state of rest (where the jacket is), it requires the Prepositional case to show location: на вешалке. If we used an action verb showing placement or destination (where the jacket is going), we would use the Accusative case, like Я вешаю куртку на вешалку (I am hanging the jacket onto the coat rack).
Does вешалка mean a coat rack or a clothes hanger?
It can actually mean both! Вешалка is a very common, versatile word that can refer to a freestanding coat rack, a row of hooks on the wall, or a single clothes hanger you put inside a closet. Context tells you which one it is.
Why does висеть end with -ит here? Isn't it a first-conjugation verb because of the -еть ending?
Висеть is one of the exceptions ending in -еть that actually follows the second conjugation pattern. The stress always falls on the endings: я вишу, ты висишь, он/она висит, and они висят. Watch out for that consonant mutation in the я form where с changes to ш!
