Questions & Answers about Комиссия этого банка — около двадцати долларов.
Why is there a dash (—) before около?
In Russian, the present tense of the verb "to be" is normally omitted. The dash is used here to stand in for "is", separating the subject (Комиссия этого банка) from what it equals (около двадцати долларов).
Why is the phrase этого банка used instead of этот банк?
It is in the Genitive case to show possession, translating to "of this bank". The demonstrative pronoun этот changes to этого, and the masculine noun банк takes the ending -а to become банка.
Why do we say двадцати долларов instead of двадцать долларов?
The preposition около (meaning "around" or "about") always requires the Genitive case. Because of this, the number двадцать changes to its Genitive form, двадцати. The noun доллар becomes the Genitive plural долларов.
I usually see комиссия used for a group of people. Can it also mean a fee?
Yes! Комиссия is a versatile word. While it can mean a committee or board of people, in financial contexts like this sentence it is the standard term for a fee, service charge, or commission charged by a bank or business.
