Questions & Answers about Развитие бизнеса требует много усилий.
Why does the verb требовать become требует here instead of требовает?
Verbs ending in -овать or -евать drop the -ова- or -ева- and replace it with -у- in the present tense. So, the infinitive требовать (to demand) becomes он требует (it demands).
Why is бизнеса in the Genitive case here?
It translates to the development of business. When one noun is directly modifying another like this, Russian uses the Genitive case to link them, functioning just like the English preposition of.
What is the dictionary form of усилий, and why does it end in -ий here?
The dictionary form is усилие (effort), which is a neuter noun. The word много (a lot) requires the noun that follows it to be in the Genitive plural. For neuter nouns ending in -ие, the Genitive plural ending changes to -ий.
Does the verb требовать always take the Genitive case, like it does with много усилий?
It depends on what is being demanded! The verb требовать usually takes the Genitive case for abstract concepts or uncountable amounts you are asking for, like усилий (efforts) or внимания (attention). However, if you demand a specific, concrete object, you use the Accusative case instead.
