Questions & Answers about Почему ты сейчас ведёшь туристов в крепость?
Why do we use ведёшь here instead of водишь?
The verb вести (you lead = ты ведёшь) is a unidirectional verb of motion. It is used for leading someone on foot in one specific direction at a specific time. Because the sentence includes сейчас (now) and names a single destination, the action is happening right now in one direction. If you were asking about a repeated habit, you would use the multidirectional водить (ты водишь).
Why does the word for tourists (туристов) look like it is in the genitive case?
It is actually in the accusative case because the tourists are the direct object being led. However, for animate nouns (people and animals), the accusative plural ending is exactly the same as the genitive plural ending. Since турист is a living person, we use the -ов ending.
Why does крепость (fortress) stay the same after в? Shouldn't it change to show direction?
When showing direction toward a destination, we use в with the accusative case. The word крепость is a feminine noun that ends in a soft sign (-ь). For this specific group of feminine nouns, the accusative form is identical to the dictionary (nominative) form, so it doesn't look like it changed at all.
Does вести always mean leading someone on foot?
Yes! Just like the basic verbs of motion (идти vs ехать), Russian distinguishes between taking someone on foot versus by vehicle. Вести means to lead or take someone on foot. If you were driving the tourists in a bus, you would use a different verb: везти.
