Questions & Answers about В среду нельзя пропустить доклад.
Why is it в среду instead of в среда?
To say 'on' a certain day of the week, Russian uses the preposition в followed by the Accusative case. Since среда (Wednesday) is a feminine noun ending in -а, it changes to среду in the Accusative.
How does the word нельзя work in this sentence?
нельзя is an impersonal word meaning 'it is not allowed', 'one must not', or 'it is impossible'. There is no specific subject like 'I' or 'you' in the Russian sentence, so it sets a general rule that translates smoothly to 'You must not' or 'One must not' in English.
Why use the perfective verb пропустить here?
When paired with нельзя, a perfective verb like пропустить (to skip/miss) usually expresses strong advice, meaning 'you really should not miss it' or 'it is impossible to miss'. Using the imperfective form would sound more like a strict, permanent rule ('skipping is strictly forbidden').
Is the word доклад in the Nominative case here?
No, it is in the Accusative case because it is the direct object of the verb пропустить (to skip). However, because доклад (report) is a masculine inanimate noun, its Accusative form looks exactly the same as its Nominative dictionary form.
