Questions & Answers about Перед тумбочкой — удобное кресло.
Why does тумбочка change to тумбочкой here?
The preposition перед (in front of) requires the Instrumental case to show location. Since тумбочка (nightstand) is a feminine noun ending in -а, its Instrumental ending becomes -ой.
What does the dash (—) do in this sentence?
Russian usually leaves out the present tense verb for 'is' or 'are'. The dash is used in written Russian to mark this omission and provide a slight pause between the location and the object.
Why does the adjective удобное end in -ое?
Adjectives must match the gender of the noun they describe. Кресло (armchair) ends in -о, making it a neuter noun. Therefore, the adjective takes the neuter ending -ое to become удобное.
Why does the sentence start with the location rather than the armchair?
Russian word order is flexible and usually puts the most important new information at the very end. Starting with the location (Перед тумбочкой) emphasizes that the thing located there is a comfortable armchair.
