Learn Russian: Совещание состоится второго сентября. - The meeting will take place on the second of September.

To say on what date something happens, Russian puts the ordinal number (first, second, third) into the Genitive case. The hidden word for date, число, is neuter, so we use neuter endings. The neuter nominative for the second is второе, and its Genitive form to mean on the second is второго.

Why is September (сентябрь) also in the Genitive case (сентября)?

The month is put into the Genitive case to express the word of. Therefore, второго сентября translates literally to on the second day of September.

Why is the letter г in второго pronounced like a v?

This is a classic Russian pronunciation rule you might remember from earlier lessons. For masculine and neuter adjectives or ordinal numbers, the Genitive endings -ого and -его are always pronounced as -ово and -ево.

How do we know состоится means will take place in the future, rather than happening right now?

The verb состояться (to take place) is a perfective verb. Perfective verbs focus on a completed result and do not have a present tense form. When you conjugate them using regular present-tense endings, like the -ится used here, they automatically refer to the future.
