Questions & Answers about Завтра четырнадцатое июня?
Why does the word for fourteenth (четырнадцатое) end in -ое?
When stating the date in Russian, we use an ordinal number (a word like first, second, or fourteenth). It takes the neuter ending -ое because it is describing the hidden neuter word число (date or number). Even though we leave число out of the sentence, the number stays neuter.
Why is June (июнь) written as июня here?
The month is in the Genitive case because we are saying the fourteenth OF June. To form the Genitive case for the masculine month июнь, we drop the soft sign (ь) at the end and replace it with я.
Where is the verb 'is' in this sentence?
There isn't one! Just like in simple sentences such as 'I am a student', Russian doesn't use a present tense verb for 'is' or 'are'. You simply place the time word завтра (tomorrow) directly next to the date.
How do I ask this as a question without changing the word order?
In Russian, you don't need to swap words around to make a question like you do in English ('Tomorrow is...' vs 'Is tomorrow...'). You use the exact same word order as a normal statement and just raise the pitch of your voice on the word you are asking about, which here is the date (четырнадцатое).
