Questions & Answers about Этот журнал стоит восемьдесят один рубль.

Why is рубль in the singular form when 81 is obviously more than one?
In Russian, the last word of a compound number dictates the form of the noun that follows it. Because 81 ends in один (one), the noun must be singular (рубль). This rule applies to all compound numbers ending in 1 (21, 31, 101, etc.), except for 11.
Is восемьдесят made up of two words?
Exactly. It is a combination of восемь (eight) and десят (an old form of ten). Notice that the soft sign (ь) from восемь stays right in the middle of the word. You will see this same pattern in the numbers 50, 60, and 70.
Would the number change if we were buying a feminine object, like a book (книга)?
Yes! The word for one changes to match the gender of the noun it counts. So 81 books would be восемьдесят одна книга. The tens part (восемьдесят) stays exactly the same.
What case is the price in after the verb стоит?
Prices and amounts take the accusative case. Because рубль is an inanimate masculine noun, its accusative form looks exactly the same as its dictionary (nominative) form.
