Questions & Answers about Этот журнал — для полёта на юг.
Why is the word for flight written as полёта instead of its dictionary form полёт?
Because it comes right after the preposition для (for). The preposition для always requires the noun following it to be in the Genitive case. Since полёт is a masculine noun ending in a consonant, we add -а to make the Genitive singular: полёта.
Why do we use на юг for 'to the south' instead of в юг?
In Russian, compass directions like юг (south), север (north), восток (east), and запад (west) always take the preposition на instead of в when talking about going to or being in those locations.
Is на юг in the Prepositional or Accusative case here?
It is in the Accusative case. Even though юг (south) looks exactly like its dictionary form, we know it is Accusative because it shows the direction of the flight (to the south). If it were describing a static location (in the south), it would be in the Prepositional case: на юге.
What is the purpose of the long dash (—) after журнал?
The dash replaces the present tense verb 'is', which is usually omitted in Russian. It acts as a visual bridge between the subject (Этот журнал, 'This magazine') and what it is for (для полёта, 'for the flight').
