Questions & Answers about Марка на конверте.
Why is there no word for "is" in this sentence?
In Russian, the present tense of the verb "to be" is almost always left out. You just say Марка на конверте (Stamp on envelope) and the "is" is understood naturally.
Why does конверте have an -е at the end?
The dictionary form of the word is конверт (envelope). When we talk about a location using на (on) or в (in), we usually add an -е to the end of the noun. This grammar rule is known as the Prepositional case.
How do we know it translates to "The stamp" and not "A stamp"?
Russian doesn't have articles like "a" or "the". Depending on the situation, марка could mean either "a stamp" or "the stamp". The English translation uses "the" here because it's the most natural fit for the context.
Could I use в instead of на here?
На means "on" (on the surface), while в means "in" (inside). If you said в конверте, it would mean the stamp is inside the envelope rather than stuck to the outside!
