Questions & Answers about Куда идут друзья?
Why is 'friends' друзья? Shouldn't it end in -и like regular masculine plurals?
Друг (friend) is irregular in the plural. Instead of just adding a letter, the end of the word changes completely to make друзья. A few other common words do this too, like брат becoming братья (brothers).
Why do we use куда instead of где for 'where'?
In Russian, куда means 'where to' and is used for motion toward a destination. Где just means 'where at' and is used for location. Since the friends are moving toward a place, we must use куда.
Why is the verb идут here?
Идут is the 'they' form of the verb идти (to go on foot). Because the subject друзья (friends) is plural, the verb has to match. If it was just one friend, it would be друг идёт.
Could I use ходят instead of идут?
It changes the meaning. Идут means they are currently on their way to a specific place. If you asked Куда ходят друзья?, it would mean 'Where do the friends go regularly?' (like to a specific club every Friday).
