Questions & Answers about Вещи в спальне.
Why does the plural word вещи end in -и?
The singular word is вещь (thing), which is a feminine noun ending in a soft sign (-ь). To make these nouns plural, we replace the soft sign with -и. Also, remember the Russian spelling rule: you can never write -ы after the letter щ anyway!
Where is the word for 'are' in this sentence?
In Russian, the present tense of the verb 'to be' (am, is, are) is almost always skipped. The sentence literally translates to 'Things in bedroom'.
Why does the word спальня (bedroom) change to спальне here?
Because we are talking about where the things are. When expressing location after в (in), most nouns take the Prepositional case. For feminine nouns ending in -я like спальня, the ending changes to -е.
How do we know it translates to 'The things' and not just 'Things'?
Russian doesn't have articles like 'a' or 'the'. You have to rely on context. Because we are pointing out the location of these items, it is clear we are talking about specific items, so 'The things' makes the most natural sense in English.
