Questions & Answers about Книга и тетрадь на столе.
Why does the word for table change to столе instead of just стол?
This is the Prepositional case in action! When you want to say where something is located using the prepositions в (in) or на (on), the noun changes. For most masculine words like стол, you simply add an -е to the end, giving you на столе (on the table).
Why is there no word for "are" in the Russian sentence?
In Russian, the present tense of the verb "to be" (am, is, are) is almost always skipped. You just put the subjects (Книга и тетрадь) and the location (на столе) side by side. Literally, the sentence says "Book and notebook on table."
How do I know whether to use на or в for a location?
Use на when something is on a surface (like a table, floor, or wall). Use в when something is inside an enclosed space (like a box, room, or bag). Since the items are resting on the flat surface of the table, на столе is the correct choice here.
Книга ends in -а, which usually makes a word feminine. Is тетрадь also feminine?
