Questions & Answers about Твой красный телефон там.
Why does the adjective красный end in -ый?
Adjectives in Russian change their endings to match the gender of the noun they describe. Since телефон (phone) ends in a consonant, it is a masculine noun. The -ый ending is the standard ending for masculine adjectives in the dictionary form, which is used when the noun is the main subject (nominative case).
Where is the word for "is" in this sentence?
Russian usually skips the verb "to be" in the present tense. You simply place the subject (твой красный телефон) and its location (там) next to each other, and the "is" is automatically understood!
Does the word for "your" (Твой) also have to match the noun?
Yes! Possessive words act a lot like adjectives in Russian. Because телефон is masculine, we must use the masculine form твой to match both the adjective (красный) and the noun. If we were talking about a feminine noun, like a car (машина), both would change to feminine endings: твоя красная машина.
Could I say Там твой красный телефон instead?
Yes, you can! Russian word order is very flexible. Putting там at the end of the sentence puts the focus on the location, answering the question "Where is it?". Putting там at the beginning sounds more like you are pointing it out: "There is your red phone."
