Questions & Answers about Музей большой и красивый.
Why do we use и here instead of а?
The conjunction и means "and" when we are simply adding similar things together. Both "big" and "beautiful" describe the same museum without any contrast, so we link them with и. We use а when we want to show a slight difference or comparison, like "The museum is big, and/but the house is small."
Where is the word for "is" in this sentence?
In Russian, we drop the verb "to be" (am, is, are) in the present tense. So, Музей большой literally translates to "Museum big", but we understand it as "The museum is big."
Both большой and красивый describe the museum, so why do their endings look different (-ой vs -ый)?
They are both masculine adjectives to match the masculine noun музей. The spelling difference is just about spoken stress! The ending -ой is used when the emphasis of the word falls on the ending itself (bol-SHOY). The ending -ый is used when the emphasis is earlier in the word (kra-SEE-vyy).
How can I tell that музей is a masculine noun?
Look at the last letter! Nouns ending in the letter й (short i) are masculine. Because the noun is masculine, any adjectives describing it must also take their masculine forms.
