Questions & Answers about Здесь осень.
Since осень ends in a soft sign, how do I know if it is masculine or feminine?
Nouns ending in a soft sign (ь) can be either masculine or feminine in the nominative case, so you usually just have to memorize their gender when you learn the word. Осень is feminine!
Both words in this sentence end in a soft sign (ь). How does that change how they sound?
The soft sign has no sound of its own, but it makes the consonant right before it "soft" (pronounced with the middle of your tongue raised toward the roof of your mouth). In здесь, the с is soft, and in осень, the н sounds a bit like the 'ni' in the English word 'onion'.
Why are there no words for 'It is' in the Russian sentence?
Russian doesn't use filler words like 'it' for weather, time, or seasons. Plus, the present tense of the verb 'to be' (is/are/am) is almost always skipped in Russian. So, the sentence is literally just 'Here autumn'.
Is it okay to change the word order and say Осень здесь?
You can, but the meaning shifts slightly. Здесь осень is the standard way to describe the local season ('It is autumn here'). Осень здесь places the emphasis on autumn, sounding more like 'Autumn is here!' (meaning the season has finally arrived).
