Topics of speech (о, об)

Talking About Things

To state what you are thinking, talking, or dreaming "about", use the preposition о followed by the topic in the prepositional case.

about (о, об, обо)
о
I often think about the weather.
Я часто думаю о погоде.

The Preposition "об"

When the following word begins with a spoken vowel (such as а, о, у, э, or и), the preposition changes to об to make it easier to pronounce.

This book is about the weather, and this text is about history.
Эта книга о погоде, а этот текст об истории.

Personal Pronouns

When you want to talk about people, personal pronouns take special forms in the prepositional case. Note that "about me" uses a third variation of the preposition: обо.

Dictionary formPrepositional (about...)
я (I)обо мне
ты (you)о тебе
он / оно (he / it)о нём
она (she)о ней
мы (we)о нас
вы (you plural/formal)о вас
они (they)о них
What does she think about me?
Что она думает обо мне?
We do not want to talk about them.
Мы не хотим говорить о них.

Asking "About What?"

If you want to ask someone what is on their mind, the question word что (what) changes to its prepositional form: чём.

What are you thinking about?
О чём ты думаешь?
