The Preposition "через" (Through / Across)
To describe moving across a space or passing through a physical medium, use the preposition через.
The noun following через must be in the Accusative case. Remember that for inanimate masculine nouns, the Accusative form is identical to the Nominative. For feminine nouns ending in -а, the ending changes to -у.
| Every day a train goes through this tunnel. | Каждый день поезд едет через этот тоннель. |
| Water passes through a pipe, and then through a filter. | Вода проходит через трубу, а потом через фильтр. |
Squeezing and Passing Through
You will frequently see через paired with verbs for passing or squeezing through spaces, such as пролезать (to squeeze through).
| The dog squeezes through the hole in the fence every day. | Собака каждый день пролезает через дыру в заборе. |
| Children often squeeze through this net. | Дети часто пролезают через эту сетку. |
Looking Through Instruments and Openings
The preposition через is also used when looking through an optical instrument (like binoculars) or a narrow opening.
Feminine nouns ending in a soft sign, like щель (crack), do not change their form in the Accusative case.
| I like looking at birds through the binoculars. | Мне нравится смотреть на птиц через бинокль. |
| Someone is looking at us through the crack in the door! | Кто-то смотрит на нас через щель в двери! |
