Public transport (трамвай, остановка)

The Vehicles

You already know автобус, метро and поезд. Russian cities run two more that English-speaking cities mostly do not:

word
трамвайtram
троллейбусtrolleybus — an electric bus on overhead wires
автомобильcar (formal; машина is the everyday word)

Транспорт is the collective term, and it is singular in Russian even though English often says "public transport" for many things at once.

Getting On and Off

Остановка is a stop — a bus stop or a tram stop. It comes from останавливаться, to halt.

Use на with it, not в: на остановке (at the stop), на остановку (to the stop).

I am walking to the stop.
Я иду на остановку.

Road and Journey

Дорога is the road itself, and also "the way" — дорога домой, the way home.

Поездка is a trip or journey. It is built from ехать, so it means travel BY VEHICLE; walking somewhere is not a поездка.
