When discussing automotive customization and mechanical tuning, we often need to contrast parts or set conditions for how a car should perform. To express "unlike" or "depending on," Russian uses two derivative compound prepositions: в отличие от and в зависимости от.
Because both of these prepositions end with the simple preposition от (from), they both require the noun or pronoun that follows them to be in the Genitive case.
В отличие от (Unlike / In contrast to)
Use в отличие от when you want to contrast two things—like a standard car and a heavily modified racing vehicle. Remember to put the object being contrasted into the Genitive case.
| Unlike an ordinary car, a racing car has a different bumper. | В отличие от обычного автомобиля, у гоночной машины другой бампер. |
| Unlike the engine, the suspension does not need to be tuned. | В отличие от двигателя, подвеску не нужно настраивать. |
You can also use it with pronouns (for example, вас, the Genitive form of вы) to contrast people's knowledge or actions.
| Unlike you, this mechanic knows how to repair the car body. | В отличие от вас, этот механик знает, как чинить кузов. |
В зависимости от (Depending on)
When a mechanic is tuning a car, the modifications often depend on external factors like weather, budget, or the condition of the parts. To express "depending on," use в зависимости от, again followed by the Genitive case.
| You can choose a racing or ordinary bumper depending on your budget. | Вы можете выбрать гоночный или обычный бампер в зависимости от вашего бюджета. |
| Depending on the condition of the car body, the mechanic needs a different tool. | В зависимости от состояния кузова механику нужен другой инструмент. |
This prepositional phrase can appear at the beginning of a sentence or later in the clause to show the condition for an action.
| The mechanic must tune not only the engine, but also the suspension depending on the weather. | Механик должен настраивать не только двигатель, но и подвеску в зависимости от погоды. |
Fine-Tuning the Details
Now you can combine your mechanical vocabulary—like подвеска (suspension), глушитель (muffler), and кузов (car body)—with these prepositions to explain exactly how and why a car is being customized.
| Although the turbine works well, we can tune it depending on the quality of the gasoline. | Хотя турбина работает хорошо, мы можем настроить её в зависимости от качества бензина. |
