Prefixes of deficit and excess (недо-, пере-)

Too Much: The Prefix пере-

To describe an action done to excess, Russian attaches the prefix пере- to a verb. This highly productive prefix instantly changes a base verb into its "overdone" equivalent. For example, adding it to the verbs for "to salt" or "to pay" expresses that you oversalted (пересолить) or overpaid (переплатить).

In my opinion, you oversalted this soup too much.
По-моему, ты слишком пересолил этот суп.

Not Enough: The Prefix недо-

Conversely, when an action is insufficient or falls short of the required mark, use the prefix недо-. Whether you are undercooking dinner (недоварить) or a company is underpaying its workers (недоплатить), this prefix expresses a clear deficit.

I am afraid of undercooking the rice for lunch.
Я боюсь недоварить рис к обеду.

Imbalances in Judgment and Health

These prefixes extend well beyond daily chores; they are frequently used to discuss mental assessments and physical well-being. You can overestimate (переоценить) or underestimate (недооценить) a situation, fail to get enough sleep (недосыпать), or push yourself too hard and get overworked (переутомиться).

If you constantly don't get enough sleep, you can get seriously ill.
Если постоянно недосыпать, можно серьёзно заболеть.
