Only and if only (лишь, лишь бы)

Strict Limitations with лишь

The particle лишь means "only" or "merely." It is interchangeable with только, but often feels slightly more restrictive or literary. It highlights that absolutely nothing else is involved beyond the bare minimum.

Minimum Conditions: лишь бы + Infinitive

Adding the conditional particle бы gives us лишь бы. This phrase expresses a strong, often desperate desire or a minimum condition for success.

When the subject is the same in both parts of the sentence, pair лишь бы with an infinitive. In this context, it translates to "just to" or "as long as."

Wishful Thinking: лишь бы + Past Tense

Like other Russian structures involving the particle бы (such as чтобы), use the past tense if a different subject performs the action, or if you are expressing an independent, stand-alone wish.

In these cases, лишь бы translates to "if only" or "as long as [someone does something]."

If only he would live until spring!
Лишь бы он дожил до весны!
