On the telephone (позвать к телефону, плохо слышно)

Asking For Someone

Russian does not say "may I speak to". The everyday request is позвать к телефону — literally "to call someone to the telephone".

Позовите, пожалуйста, Ольгу к телефону. Could you get Olga on the phone, please.

A shorter version drops the verb entirely: Ольгу, пожалуйста.

When It Is the Wrong Number

Вы не туда попали — literally "you have got to the wrong place" — is the fixed formula. It is not rude; it is simply what people say.

Это не Борис? — Нет, вы не туда попали.

When You Cannot Hear

Плохо слышно is impersonal: no subject at all, just "badly audible". The same shape gives you Хорошо слышно? — Can you hear me all right?

Leaving a Message

Передать is the verb for passing a message on, and a written one is a записка.

Что ему *передать? — Can I take a message? Я оставил тебе записку на столе.*
