Spatial Correlatives
When connecting clauses about location, English often just uses "where." Russian prefers a matched pair: a demonstrative adverb ("there") in the main clause and a relative adverb ("where") in the dependent clause.
Choose the pair based on direction: static location, motion toward a destination, or motion away from a source. Always separate the clauses with a comma.
Static Location: Там, где
For fixed locations, use там (there) and где (where).
| The sound is always very resonant where the acoustics are good. | Звук всегда очень звонкий там, где хорошая акустика. |
| This coating absorbs noise where people work. | Это покрытие поглощает шум там, где работают люди. |
Motion Toward: Туда, куда
For movement toward a destination, use туда (to there) and куда (to where).
| Sound propagates to where you direct it. | Звук распространяется туда, куда вы его направляете. |
| The engineer directs the speaker to where the audience is looking. | Инженер направляет динамик туда, куда смотрят зрители. |
Motion Away: Оттуда, откуда
For movement originating from a source, use оттуда (from there) and откуда (from where).
| The impulse bounces back from where it came. | Импульс отражается оттуда, откуда он пришёл. |
| A resonant echo returns from where you shouted. | Звонкое эхо возвращается оттуда, откуда вы кричали. |
Changing the Clause Order
The dependent clause (the "where" part) can come first to set the scene. The paired words stay with their respective clauses.
| Where the coating does not absorb the noise, it bounces strongly off the walls. | Там, где покрытие не поглощает шум, он сильно отражается от стен. |
