When you want to do something but your body or mind won't cooperate—like trying to sleep but staying wide awake—Russian uses a special impersonal construction. Instead of saying "I can't sleep," you say something closer to "it doesn't sleep to me."
To express these involuntary states:
- Put the person experiencing the state in the Dative case (e.g., мне for "to me").
- Add не and an imperfective reflexive verb (ending in -ся) in the 3rd person singular.
Let's look at the most common example: struggling to sleep (спаться) due to insomnia (бессонница).
| I have insomnia and stress, so I can't sleep. | У меня бессонница и стресс, поэтому мне не спится. |
| It's already midnight, but I can't sleep. I lie here, tossing and turning. | Уже полночь, а мне не спится. Лежу, ворочаюсь. |
Mental Blocks
This same Dative + reflexive verb pattern applies to mental states. If you are distracted by anxiety (тревога) or a headache, you can use думаться (to think) or работаться (to work) to express that thoughts or productivity just aren't flowing.
| When my head hurts, I can't think well and can't work. | Когда у меня болит голова, мне плохо думается и не работается. |
| Yesterday I was scared. I took a sleeping pill, and today I can't get any work done at all. | Вчера мне было страшно. Я выпил снотворное, а сегодня совсем не работается. |
Restlessness and Disbelief
You can also use this construction to describe physical restlessness or disbelief.
- не сидится literally means "it doesn't sit," used when someone can't sit still.
- не верится means "it isn't believed," used when you can't wrap your head around something.
Notice how the Dative subject can be a pronoun (like ему) or a noun (like студентам).
| The boy is worried, so he can't sit still. | Мальчик волнуется, поэтому ему не сидится на месте. |
| The students can't sit still in the classroom: they can't believe that vacation is soon! | Студентам не сидится в аудитории: не верится, что скоро каникулы! |
