Framing Official Events
In formal and business Russian, you will frequently encounter two compound prepositions used to describe the context or timing of an event: в рамках and в ходе.
Because both prepositions essentially mean "in the frames of" and "in the course of", they always require the noun that follows them to be in the Genitive case.
Process Nouns in the Genitive
Official processes are often described using abstract nouns ending in -ция (feminine) or -ние (neuter). To use these with our new prepositions, you must put them in the Genitive case:
- Feminine nouns ending in -ия change to -ии (e.g., модернизация becomes модернизации).
- Neuter nouns ending in -ие change to -ия (e.g., расследование becomes расследования).
Remember that any adjectives modifying these nouns must also take their respective Genitive endings, such as the feminine -ой.
В рамках (As part of)
The preposition в рамках literally means "in the frames." It is used to express that an action is happening "as part of," "within the scope of," or "in the framework of" a larger initiative or project.
| As part of the large-scale modernization, we replaced all the equipment. | В рамках масштабной модернизации мы заменили всё оборудование. |
| As part of the optimization, we are planning a staff reduction. | В рамках оптимизации мы планируем сокращение персонала. |
В ходе (In the course of)
The preposition в ходе literally translates to "in the course." It is used to frame an action that happens "during" an ongoing process, investigation, or event. It functions as a formal alternative to во время.
| During the modernization of the plant, we saved one and a half million. | В ходе модернизации завода мы сэкономили полтора миллиона. |
| During the investigation, the police found these documents. | В ходе расследования полиция нашла эти документы. |
Genitive Noun Chains
These abstract process nouns frequently link together with other nouns to specify exactly what is being modernized, optimized, or implemented.
When you say "the implementation of the project," the second noun is placed in the Genitive case (проекта). This chain stays intact even when the whole phrase follows в рамках or в ходе.
| As part of the project's implementation, we will hire new specialists. | В рамках реализации проекта мы наймём новых специалистов. |
| The implementation of this program will take one and a half years. | Реализация этой программы займёт полтора года. |
