The Genitive of Negation
When a transitive verb is negated with не (not), its direct object often shifts from the Accusative to the Genitive case.
Known as the "Genitive of negation," this pattern is especially common with abstract concepts. It emphasizes the complete absence of something, such as a lack of meaning, benefit, or opportunity.
| This fact has no significance. | Этот факт не имеет никакого значения. |
| The new law brings no benefit to society. | Новый закон не приносит обществу пользы. |
| The project does not give the opportunity we were waiting for so much. | Проект не даёт возможности, которой мы так ждали. |
Denying Intentions and Desires
This pattern is standard when expressing a lack of drive or justification. Nouns like intention (намерение), desire (желание), and reason (повод) take the Genitive case after a negated verb.
| The director didn't hide the intention to buy this company. | Директор не скрывал намерения купить эту компанию. |
| The patient has no desire to communicate with us. | Пациент не имеет желания общаться с нами. |
| I didn't give you any reason to be jealous. | Я не давал тебе никакого повода ревновать. |
Abstract Feelings and Concepts
The Genitive of negation applies broadly across abstract ideas. Whether you are talking about losing patience (терпение), taking part (участие), or feeling respect (уважение)—if the verb is negated, the abstract object takes the Genitive.
| The teacher never loses patience. | Учитель никогда не теряет терпения. |
| My brother no longer takes part in the game. | Мой брат больше не принимает участия в игре. |
| I feel no respect for this person. | Я не чувствую уважения к этому человеку. |
