Factual Consequence with "так что"

To express a factual consequence, use the conjunction так что (so / with the result that). It connects two clauses where the second clause is the direct, real-world result of the first.

  • The first clause describes the cause or situation.
  • The second clause describes the consequence.
  • Always place a comma before так что.
Yesterday there was a blizzard all day, so we stayed at home.
Вчера весь день была метель, так что мы остались дома.
A blizzard began, so our flight was delayed.
Началась метель, так что наш рейс задержали.

Force Majeure and Impersonal Verbs

This lesson includes vocabulary for unexpected events, technical faults (неполадка), and extreme weather. When talking about accidents involving water (like pipes bursting or streets flooding), Russian frequently uses impersonal verbs in the neuter past tense, such as прорвало (burst) or затопило (flooded).

Their street was flooded, so they moved.
Их улицу затопило, так что они переехали.
A pipe burst in the office, so we are working at home.
В офисе прорвало трубу, так что мы работаем дома.
Force majeure happened, so we postponed the meeting.
Случился форс-мажор, так что мы перенесли встречу.

Rescheduling and Refunds

When unforeseen problems arise, they often lead to a cancellation, a перенос (postponement / rescheduling), or a возврат (refund). Use так что to link the incident to your administrative response.

The concert was cancelled, so we demand our money back.
Концерт отменили, так что мы требуем вернуть деньги.
A malfunction happened, so we are waiting for the rescheduling of the match.
Случилась неполадка, так что мы ждём перенос матча.
There was a flood, this is force majeure, so we are making a refund.
