Avant-garde art (авангард) can be confusing. When you're staring at a conceptual piece wondering if it is a masterpiece or just nonsense (бред), use что за to express your exasperation.
The Exclamatory "Что за"
To express surprise, indignation, or ask "what kind of" thing something is, use что за followed by the Nominative case. It is invariable, meaning it never changes form.

Use it to complain about an installation (инсталляция) that looks like a dump (свалка).

Pointing with "это"
To point at a specific object and ask "What kind of thing is this?", insert это directly between что and за. The noun remains in the Nominative case.
| What kind of conceptual black cube is this? | Что это за концептуальный чёрный куб? |
This structure lets you vent your frustrations perfectly when a performance (перформанс) feels like a mockery (издевательство) or a painting looks like a careless daub (мазня).
| What a mockery this stupid performance is! | Что за издевательство этот глупый перформанс! |
| What a daub this painting is! | Что за мазня эта картина! |
Whether questioning a piece or deciding a conceptual pile (куча) simply isn't art, что за is your go-to phrase for theatrical disbelief.
