Approaching (подходить к)

The Prefix под- and Preposition к

To describe moving toward or approaching a destination or person, Russian adds the prefix под- ("up to" or "approach") to verbs of motion.

These verbs are paired with the preposition к and the Dative case to indicate the target you are approaching.

  • Masculine and neuter nouns: add -у or -ю (светофор → к светофору)
  • Feminine nouns: change to -е or -и (скамейка → к скамейке)

Approaching on Foot: подходить / подойти

Use подходить (imperfective) or подойти (perfective) for walking up to something. The prefix becomes подо- in the perfective form for easier pronunciation.

We are approaching the receptionist's counter.
Мы подходим к стойке администратора.
Come up to this bench, please.
Подойдите к этой скамейке, пожалуйста.
Fifteen tourists walked up to the ticket office.
Пятнадцать туристов подошли к кассе.

Approaching by Vehicle: подъезжать / подъехать

Use подъезжать (imperfective) or подъехать (perfective) when approaching by vehicle. A hard sign (ъ) is inserted between the prefix and the root to separate the д and е.

The bus is slowly driving up to the traffic light.
Автобус медленно подъезжает к светофору.
The car is driving up to the intersection.
Машина подъезжает к перекрёстку.
Someone drove up to the store's parking lot.
Кто-то подъехал к парковке магазина.

Running Up To: подбегать / подбежать

Use подбегать (imperfective) or подбежать (perfective) for running up to a person or place.

The boy ran up to the receptionist.
Мальчик подбежал к администратору.
The dog often runs up to my bench.
Собака часто подбегает к моей скамейке.
