When plural animate nouns (people and animals) act as the direct object of a sentence, their Accusative case forms match the Genitive plural. (Inanimate nouns simply copy the Nominative plural.)
Adjectives and demonstrative pronouns modifying them also take Genitive plural endings:
- -ых for hard-stem adjectives (популярный → популярных)
- -их for soft stems, pronouns, and spelling rules (эти → этих, наш → наших)
| I know these popular bloggers. | Я знаю этих популярных блогеров. |
Masculine Nouns
Most masculine nouns ending in a consonant take -ов (or -ев).
| She invites popular directors for an interview. | Она приглашает популярных режиссёров на интервью. |
| The children want to see their idols. | Дети хотят видеть своих кумиров. |
Some masculine nouns drop a "fleeting" vowel from their root when adding endings. For example, певец (singer) becomes певцов.
| The fans are waiting for the famous singers. | Фанаты ждут известных певцов. |
Feminine Nouns
Feminine nouns ending in -а drop the final vowel, resulting in a "zero ending" (певица → певиц).
| Journalists often meet these singers. | Журналисты часто встречают этих певиц. |
Feminine nouns ending in a soft sign (-ь), like модель, take the ending -ей.
| We photograph beautiful models. | Мы фотографируем красивых моделей. |
When a sentence has multiple direct objects or modifiers, apply these rules to each word in the phrase.
| The journalist invites popular singers and models to an interview. | Журналист приглашает популярных певиц и моделей на интервью. |
