Turistul caută harta pe telefon.

From Lesson 65:Getting Around·Romanian

Questions & Answers about Turistul caută harta pe telefon.

Why is it Turistul and not just Turist?
In Romanian, the word for "the" is attached to the end of the noun. Turist means "tourist", and adding the suffix -ul makes it Turistul, meaning "the tourist".
Why isn't there a word for "for" after caută?
The Romanian verb caută already means "looks for" or "searches for". You just put the object you are looking for directly after the verb. Adding an extra word for "for" (like pentru) would be incorrect here.
How does the word for map, hartă, become harta?
Just like -ul is added to masculine words, feminine words ending in ă change their ending to a to mean "the". So, hartă (a map) becomes harta (the map).
Why does it say pe telefon instead of pe telefonul if the English translation says "on the phone"?
After simple prepositions like pe (on), în (in), or la (at), Romanian usually drops the word "the" at the end of the noun. So, "on the phone" is simply pe telefon.
