Becoming Something New ("a deveni")
To express a change in identity, profession, or state, Romanian uses the verb a deveni (to become).
The noun or adjective that follows it is used in its bare nominative form—meaning you do not add a definite or indefinite article.
| When are you going to become mature and responsible? | Când o să devii matur și responsabil? |
| The child became an adult. | Copilul a devenit adult. |
| She did not become a doctor, but she became a leader. | Ea nu a devenit medic, ci a devenit lider. |
Ending Up a Certain Way ("a ajunge")
You have likely seen a ajunge used to mean "to arrive." However, when linking a subject to a noun or adjective, it translates to "to end up" or "to eventually become."
Just like with a deveni, the following noun or adjective stays in its bare, unarticulated form.
| After university, he ended up a specialist. | După universitate, el a ajuns specialist. |
| The city where I live ended up well-known. | Orașul unde locuiesc a ajuns cunoscut. |
Expressing Growth and Traits
When adjectives follow these verbs of change, remember that they must agree in gender and number with the subject of the sentence.
| The woman was working a lot and became respected. | Femeia lucra mult și a devenit respectată. |
| Our employee ended up dedicated and confident. | Angajatul nostru a ajuns dedicat și încrezător. |
| He did not end up well-known, but wise. | El nu a ajuns cunoscut, ci înțelept. |
