The Standard Future Tense
Romanian has a few ways to talk about the future, but the most common formal and standard method uses a structure very similar to English. You simply pair a future auxiliary verb (meaning "will") with the infinitive form of the main verb.
When using the infinitive here, you must drop the particle a that usually appears before it. For example, a studia (to study) becomes just studia.
Here are the future tense auxiliary verbs for each pronoun:
| Pronoun | Auxiliary (Will) |
|---|
| Eu | voi |
| Tu | vei |
| El / Ea | va |
| Noi | vom |
| Voi | veți |
| Ei / Ele | vor |
Singular Subjects: Voi, Vei, and Va
To say "I will study", combine voi with studia to make voi studia. This structure is frequently used when discussing long-term plans, such as academic degrees or career paths.
If the verb is reflexive, the reflexive pronoun (such as se or mă) is placed before the auxiliary verb.
Plural Subjects: Vom, Veți, and Vor
The pattern remains exactly the same for plural subjects. Let's look at some examples discussing higher education goals, like a master's degree (masteratul) or a doctorate (doctoratul).
Future Tense with Conditions
You will frequently use the future tense alongside conditions or commands. For example, you can use the future tense in both halves of a sentence to state that someone will pass an exam if they complete their research.
