At the Post Office
When you want to send a package, you are expeditorul (the sender). The verb to send or dispatch is a expedia.
To explain why you are doing something, use pentru a followed by the infinitive form of the verb (like "in order to").
| The sender came to dispatch the parcel. | Expeditorul a venit pentru a expedia coletul. |
If you want your package to arrive faster, you can choose to send it prioritar (priority).
| I dispatched the package priority. | Pachetul l-am expediat prioritar. |
To express uncertainty or a guess, you can start your sentence with the phrase poate că (maybe / perhaps).
| Maybe the sender got the address wrong. | Poate că expeditorul a greșit adresa. |
Recipients and Notices
The person receiving the package is destinatarul (the recipient). When referring to people respectfully, you can use the polite pronouns dânsul (he) or dânsa (she).
| He is the recipient of this package. | Dânsul este destinatarul acestui pachet. |
If the recipient is not home, the postal worker will leave a delivery notice, known as avizul.
| I left the notice for the recipient. | Avizul l-am lăsat destinatarului. |
Registered Mail and Deliveries
For important documents, you might want to send them recomandat (registered). Remember that adjectives in Romanian agree in gender and number with the noun they describe, so you will see forms like recomandată for feminine nouns.
When expressing likelihood, use the phrase probabil că (probably).
| The registered envelope probably arrived today. | Probabil că plicul recomandat a ajuns astăzi. |
The process of bringing the package is called livrarea (the delivery), and the person bringing it to your door is poștașul (the postman).
| To ensure the delivery, send the registered envelope. | Pentru a asigura livrarea, trimiteți plicul recomandat. |
| The postman is coming to bring the registered letter. | Poștașul vine pentru a aduce scrisoarea recomandată. |
Finally, when talking about a group of people respectfully, use the polite plural pronouns dânșii (they, for masculine or mixed groups) and dânsele (they, for feminine groups).
| They paid for a fast delivery. | Dânșii au plătit pentru o livrare rapidă. |
| They are waiting for the delivery of the priority package. | Dânsele așteaptă livrarea pachetului prioritar. |
