Reported yes/no questions (dacă)

Reporting Yes/No Questions with "Dacă"

To report a yes/no question, use the conjunction dacă (if/whether) to connect a reporting phrase to the main question.

We want to know if the client read the questionnaire.
Vrem să știm dacă clientul a citit chestionarul.
The study checks if the consumer's preference follows the trend.
Studiul verifică dacă preferința consumatorului urmărește tendința.

Asking and Inquiring in Market Research

When conducting surveys, use verbs like a întreba (to ask), a afla (to find out), and a verifica (to check). If you specify who you asked, remember to use the direct object marker pe for specific people, along with the matching direct object pronoun.

I asked the buyer if he is willing to watch the advertisement.
L-am întrebat pe cumpărător dacă este dispus să privească reclama.
We check if the buyer is interested in the new packaging.
Verificăm dacă cumpărătorul este interesat de ambalajul nou.
We want to find out if the advertisement changes the sample's trend.
Vrem să aflăm dacă reclama schimbă tendința eșantionului.

Tense Consistency

Unlike English, Romanian does not shift verb tenses in reported speech. The reported verb stays in the exact same tense as the original question, even if the reporting verb is in the past.

If the original question was in the present tense ("Is the packaging next to the product?"), the reported question stays in the present tense.

They checked if the new packaging is put next to the product.
Ei au verificat dacă ambalajul nou este pus lângă produs.
I forgot to ask if the buyer prefers the red color.
Am uitat să întreb dacă cumpărătorul preferă culoarea roșie.
