Reported Wh- questions

Reporting Wh- Questions

When you report an open-ended question (one that asks who, what, where, when, why, or how), you simply use the original interrogative word to connect the reporting phrase to the question itself. Unlike English, Romanian does not require you to change the word order or shift the verb tense in reported speech.

He asks me where the location is.
El mă întreabă unde este locația.
The organizer wants to know when we arrive.
Organizatorul vrea să știe când ajungem.

Coordinating Details

When planning events, you will often need to report questions to coordinate logistics. You can use verbs like a clarifica (to clarify), a preciza (to specify), and a se întreba (to wonder) alongside question words like cine (who), cum (how), and de ce (why).

We must clarify who is making the reservation today.
Trebuie să clarificăm cine face rezervarea astăzi.
Please specify how you wish to pay.
Vă rog să precizați cum doriți să plătiți.
Radu wonders why you proposed this modification.
Radu se întreabă de ce ai propus această modificare.

Questions with Prepositions

Sometimes the original question includes a preposition right before the question word, such as la ce (at what), de unde (from where), or pe care (on which). When reporting these questions, keep the preposition attached to the interrogative word exactly as it was in the direct question.

We want to fix at what time the event begins.
Noi vrem să fixăm la ce oră începe evenimentul.
They propose that we check where the problem comes from.
Ei propun să verificăm de unde vine problema.
The client asks us on which date we fixed the meeting.
Clientul ne întreabă pe care dată am fixat ședința.
