Quantitative demonstratives (atâta, atâți, atâtea)

Expressing "So Much"

To express "so much" with an uncountable noun (like food or dust), use the quantitative demonstrative atâta. It does not change its form in the singular, regardless of the noun's gender.

It is overwhelming to see so much dust in the middle of the room.
Este copleșitor să vezi atâta praf în mijlocul camerei.
Since we have so much food, the situation is not overwhelming.
Din moment ce avem atâta mâncare, situația nu este copleșitoare.

Expressing "So Many"

With countable objects or people ("so many"), the demonstrative changes to match the gender of the plural noun.

For masculine plural nouns, use atâția (or atâți):

Why are there so many men here in this crowd?
De ce sunt atâția bărbați aici în această înghesuială?

For feminine and neuter plural nouns, use atâtea:

We found so many books under the pile behind the garage.
Am găsit atâtea cărți sub grămada din spatele garajului.
Girls, do not buy so many knick-knacks from the store!
Fetelor, nu cumpărați atâtea fleacuri de la magazin!

Dealing With Excess

When collections become copleșitor (overwhelming), you might need to sort (a tria) or completely get rid of (a se debarasa de) things that feel sufocant (suffocating). Notice how atâta is used again below for the uncountable noun mobilă (furniture):

It is suffocating to live with so much furniture if you do not get rid of it.
Este sufocant să locuiești cu atâta mobilă dacă nu te debarasezi de ea.
