The "-ez" Verb Pattern
Many Conjugation 1 verbs (ending in -a) take an -ez suffix in the present tense. This large group includes many words for work, studies, and hobbies.
For eu, tu, el/ea, and ei/ele, you insert this suffix before the regular ending. The noi and voi forms do not use it.
Here is the pattern for a dansa (to dance):
| Pronoun | Verb |
|---|
| eu | dansez |
| tu | dansezi |
| el/ea | dansează |
| noi | dansăm |
| voi | dansați |
| ei/ele | dansează |
Many common verbs follow this pattern, like a exersa (to practice):
Verbs Ending in "-ia"
For verbs ending in -ia, like a studia (to study), the endings adjust slightly to blend with the "i". For example, el/ea and ei/ele take -iază instead of -ează, and noi takes -em instead of -ăm.
| Pronoun | Verb |
|---|
| eu | studiez |
| tu | studiezi |
| el/ea | studiază |
| noi | studiem |
| voi | studiați |
| ei/ele | studiază |
Hobbies and Projects
As you learn new words for your hobbies or work projects, you will see the -ez pattern everywhere. Verbs like a desena (to draw), a picta (to paint), and a organiza (to organize) all use it.
Remember that just like regular -a verbs, the el/ea (he/she) and ei/ele (they) forms are always identical!
