Marking Specific People
In Romanian, when the direct object of a sentence is a specific person (like "my friend", "the boss", or a name), it gets special treatment. You cannot simply place the noun after the verb like you do with inanimate objects.
Instead, you must mark the object in two places at once:
- Place the preposition pe immediately before the person.
- Place the matching direct object pronoun (îl for masculine, o for feminine) directly before the verb.
Masculine Persons: îl ... pe
When the specific person is masculine, use the pronoun îl before the verb, and pe before the noun.
| I know your boss. | Eu îl cunosc pe șeful tău. |
| The employee is calling his boss immediately. | Angajatul îl sună pe șeful lui imediat. |
| I am looking for my boss. | Eu îl caut pe șeful meu. |
Feminine Persons: o ... pe
When the specific person is feminine, use the pronoun o before the verb, and pe before the noun.
| Do you know my colleague? | Tu o cunoști pe colega mea? |
| I am calling my friend now. | Eu o sun pe prietena mea acum. |
| Are you inviting the new client? | Tu o inviți pe clienta nouă? |
| They respect their boss. | Ei o respectă pe șefa lor. |
