The Outside of the Book and Passive Actions
Welcome to the publishing house! In this lesson, we will explore the anatomy of a book. Let's start with the exterior parts like coperta (the cover) and cotorul (the spine), which are produced by editura (the publishing house).
When describing how books are made in general, you will often use the reflexive pronoun se before a verb to express a passive action, translating to English as "is printed" or "is glued".
| The cover is printed first. | Coperta se tipărește mai întâi. |
| The spine is glued carefully. | Cotorul se lipește cu atenție. |
The Versatile Adverb "Mai"
As you read through a book, you might encounter extra materials like ilustrația (the illustration) or anexa (the appendix).
The little adverb mai is incredibly common in Romanian, and its meaning shifts based on how you use it:
- Before a verb and paired with an indefinite article (like o or un), it means "another" or "one more".
- In a negative sentence, placed right after nu, it means "not anymore".
| The author adds another illustration. | Autorul mai adaugă o ilustrație. |
| Do not open the cover anymore to read the dedication. | Nu mai deschide coperta pentru a citi dedicația. |
Background Actions in the Past
Now let's open the book to prefața (the preface) and dedicația (the dedication).
When recounting a story, you will often need to show that a background action was ongoing when a sudden action occurred. You will use the imperfect tense for the ongoing action (translated as "was reading" or "was admiring") and the perfect compus for the completed action that interrupts it ("wrote" or "closed"). These two clauses are typically linked by când (when).
| I was reading the preface when she wrote the dedication. | Eu citeam prefața când ea a scris dedicația. |
| I was admiring the illustration when you closed the novel. | Eu admiram ilustrația când tu ai închis romanul. |
Reference Materials
Finally, at the back of the book, you will find reference sections like cuprinsul (the table of contents), indexul (the index), and glosarul (the glossary).
To ask or state if an action is ongoing, you can use the adverb mai again. When placed directly before a verb in an affirmative or interrogative sentence, it translates to "still."
| Are you still reading the glossary and the index? | Tu mai citești glosarul și indexul? |
