North, south, east, west

The four directions

directionthe …in the … of the country
nordnordulîn nordul țării
sudsudulîn sudul țării
estestulîn estul țării
vestvestulîn vestul țării

To say where a place is, use în + the direction with its article + the country or city in the genitive — the case you have just learned: țara → țării, orașul → orașului, România → României.

Suceava is in the north of Romania.
Suceava este în nordul României.
Craiova is in the south of the country.
Craiova este în sudul țării.
The city of Iași is in the east of the country.
Orașul Iași este în estul țării.
Timișoara is in the west of the country.
Timișoara este în vestul țării.
Constanța is on the Black Sea, in the east of the country.
Constanța este la Marea Neagră, în estul țării.

Inside a city

The same pattern works for parts of a city.

We live in the west of the city.
Locuim în vestul orașului.

Without the article

After din (from) the direction loses its article, like any noun after a preposition.

The wind blows from the north.
Vântul bate din nord.
