Negative condition (fără ca... să)

The "Fără ca ... să" Structure

When an action happens "without" something else occurring, Romanian uses the subjunctive mood. If the same person performs both actions, use fără să. However, if the main action and the "without" action have two different subjects (e.g., she acts without him acting), split the phrase around the new subject: fără ca + [Second Subject] + să + [Subjunctive Verb].

She pulls the lever without him twisting the crank.
The girls try to decode the document without the director seeing them.
He decodes the text without the hourglass emptying.
Why did you twist the crank without me telling you?

Expressing Purpose

This rule of splitting the conjunction also applies to other structures when there are disjoint subjects. To express purpose ("so that" or "in order that") involving a new subject, use the parallel structure pentru ca + [Second Subject] + să + [Subjunctive Verb].

I twist the crank slowly so that the door opens.
He lights up the cipher so that we can decode it.
