The Orchestra
Let's get ready to make some music! We will start with the orchestra (orchestra).
| I know that the orchestra plays very well. | Știu că orchestra cântă foarte bine. |
Flutes and Trumpets
Next, let's meet some instruments. You will notice that neuter instruments like the flute take the definite article -ul (flautul), while feminine instruments like the trumpet take -a (trompeta).
When you talk about playing an instrument in Romanian, you use the verb a cânta (which also means "to sing") followed by the preposition la and the instrument.
| The girl learned to play the flute. | Fata a învățat să cânte la flaut. |
| Nobody heard the trumpet. | Nimeni nu a auzit trompeta. |
Keys and Drums
Our next instruments to join the band are the accordion (acordeonul) and the drum (toba).
| You cannot play the accordion here. | Nu poți să cânți la acordeon aici. |
| The boy hits the drum with his hand. | Băiatul lovește toba cu mâna. |
Saxophones and Conductors
Every great orchestra needs a leader. The conductor is dirijorul. We can also add the saxophone (saxofonul) to our ensemble.
| The woman plays the saxophone every evening. | Femeia cântă la saxofon în fiecare seară. |
| The conductor stopped the orchestra suddenly. | Dirijorul a oprit orchestra dintr-odată. |
The Clarinet
Finally, we have the clarinet (clarinetul).
| If I had a clarinet, I would play in the orchestra. | Dacă aș avea un clarinet, aș cânta în orchestră. |
Now you have all the vocabulary you need to start your own musical group!
