Hunting for Treasures: "Any" or "Some"
When wandering through a flea market, you will often need to ask if a merchant has "any" specific items, or say you are hoping to find "some" rare antique.
| We are looking for valuable objects at the flea market. | Căutăm obiecte valoroase la târgul de vechituri. |
To express "any" or "some" in a non-specific way, Romanian uses the indefinite adjectives vreun and vreo. They are typically used in questions, conditional statements (like "if" clauses), or with the preposition fără (without).
Masculine and Neuter: "Vreun"
For masculine and neuter nouns, use vreun directly before the noun.
| Have you visited any fair in this city? | Ai vizitat vreun târg în acest oraș? |
| Do you know any collector who buys old coins? | Cunoști vreun colecționar care cumpără monede vechi? |
| Do you want to haggle with any merchant? | Vrei să te tocmești cu vreun negustor? |
Feminine: "Vreo"
For feminine nouns, use vreo.
| If I found any authentic old item, I would be very happy. | Dacă aș găsi vreo vechitură autentică, aș fi foarte fericit. |
| I am looking for some porcelain cup hidden in the box. | Caut vreo ceașcă de porțelan ascunsă în cutie. |
"Without Any": Using with Fără
In strict negative sentences (like "I don't have any money"), Romanian uses different words (niciun / nicio). However, to express "without any", pair the preposition fără (without) with vreun or vreo.
| This collector left without any medal. | Acest colecționar a plecat fără vreo medalie. |
| Walking around the market, I bought a record without any defect. | Plimbându-mă prin piață, am cumpărat un disc fără vreun defect. |
